RAS Students launch Hurricane Helene Relief Drive
Students in Mr. Getzke’s Health Class at TST’s Regional Alternative School (RAS) are stepping up to organize a relief drive for those impacted by Hurricane Helene.

Hurricane Helene tore through southwest Florida in late September as a powerful Category 4 storm, with sustained winds of 140 mph. It caused massive flooding in North Carolina and widespread damage in Georgia. Emergency declarations were issued for Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia as the storm's effects spread. Helene has become the deadliest mainland hurricane since Katrina in 2005, with a death toll surpassing 230 as rescue efforts continue. The estimated total damage and economic loss from the storm is projected to be between $95 billion and $110 billion.

After learning about the storm's devastating effects, students asked Mr. Getzke how they could help. Together, they researched the most needed items and launched a grassroots effort to support those affected by the disaster.

The RAS students hope to assist those affected by the storm by collecting essential items, including:
- Water
- Baby formula
- Diapers
- Individually packaged, non-perishable snacks and meals
- Trash bags
- Bandaids
- First aid supplies
- Batteries
- Toothbrushes and toothpaste
- Socks
- Towels and washcloths
- Dog and cat food
- Disinfectant wipes

No cash donations are being accepted as this drive is focused on collecting tangible goods that will be sent directly to impacted areas.

To spread the word, students created posters and placed them around the TST BOCES main campus. Donations can be dropped off at the Regional Alternative School, and collections will run Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. until October 25.

The students are hoping their efforts will inspire the TST community to join them in supporting the victims of Hurricane Helene, as relief efforts continue to address the devastation caused by this catastrophic storm.
